Tiles, Trays and Treasures – Explore textures, carving, stamping and drawing in clay. Invent new ways to use found objects as texture tools. Objects from nature, the kitchen cabinet and hardware store will be used to create dynamic surface design. Students will learn the philosophy of Wabi Sabi, the art of imperfection and happy accidents as it is applied in class. Techniques of coiling, carving and stamping will be explored for surfaces rich in raw texture.

Surface Design in Clay

Tiles, Trays and Textures

Instructor, Heather Eiden, has a BFA in Ceramics from UWM and a Master of Science in Art Education from Concordia University.

Heather will lead you through a discovery of clay as a surface for creativity. Explore texturizing, carving, stamping and drawing in clay. Invent new ways to use found objects as print tools. Objects from nature, the kitchen cabinet and hardware store will be used to create dynamic surface design blocks. Learn the principles of Wabi Sabi, the art of imperfection as it is applied in class. Become sensitive to streets, architecture and environments as they inspired surfaces rich in raw texture.

Students will make 4-6 tiles and sushi trays using several techniques from their surface design exploration. Journaling and sketching will be integrated into each classroom session for reflection.
