Surface Design in Clay
Tiles, Trays and Textures
Instructor, Heather Eiden, has a BFA in Ceramics from UWM and a Master of Science in Art Education from Concordia University.
Heather will lead you through a discovery of clay as a surface for creativity. Explore texturizing, carving, stamping and drawing in clay. Invent new ways to use found objects as print tools. Objects from nature, the kitchen cabinet and hardware store will be used to create dynamic surface design blocks. Learn the principles of Wabi Sabi, the art of imperfection as it is applied in class. Become sensitive to streets, architecture and environments as they inspired surfaces rich in raw texture.
Students will make 4-6 tiles and sushi trays using several techniques from their surface design exploration. Journaling and sketching will be integrated into each classroom session for reflection.
